Mount Edgecumbe is a basaltic/dacitic stratovolcano reaching 970m in height. The volcano hadn’t erupted for nearly 9000-13,000 years, until in 1974, it erupted in the most unusual fashion. Erupted in a way no volcano had ever done before.
39 years ago to the day, inhabitants of a town woke up to a simmering mountain. There was a plume of thick black smoke pouring out of the crater. The volcano looked like it might pop.
The inhabitants started to worry, and a helicopter bravely took off to check the volcano’s status: a brave, and gallant mission into the volcanic crater. What he saw, however, was not a simmering volcano but a huge pile of tyres on fire! And 50ft letters spelling ‘April Fool’ was spray-painted on the rim.
The practical joker, brilliantly named “Porky” Bikar was the brains behind the prank waiting patiently for 4 years to crack this one out. Ever looking out the window every April 1st to see if the conditions were just right. Collecting 70 tyres over the years, he kept them hidden until one April 1st in 1974 he was blessed with clear skies. This has to be one of the best and April Fools prank ever done. Did you do better today?
